Happenings: June 10 - June 14th

Explore more than 30 works by Indigenous artist Jeffrey Gipson at The Broad Museum in LA. Gipson was the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale.  The
installation titled Jeffrey Gibson: The space in which to place me features beaded pieces and the use of foundational American documents to explore themes of oppression, history, survival and resilience. For the first time in seven years Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrors is on view in the United States at the Dallas Museum of Art. The show features All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, a mirrored world of glowing gourds by legendary 96-year-old artist. Each visit last 45 seconds and only two people a can enter at a time. The Asheville Art Museum is honoring Native American voices with the exhibition Native America In Translation. Curated by artist Wendy Red Star, the exhibition features works from artists representing various native nations and affiliations. The pieces in the show confront the tribal eviction from native lands, climate change, and resistance through language. The exhibition runs through November 3, 2025. Join Ghanaian born fashion designer Mimi Plange at Atelier Jolie in  NYC for a Freeform Needle Felting Workshop on June 17th at 4pm. Participants will learn needle felting techniques to personalize and embellish their garments. Visit Atelier Jolie for more ticket prices and more. 

Kara Walker, an artist known for her art and pointed installations critiquing the historical exploitation of Black Americans in American society, has a new exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) examines the use of divinity and spirituality to transmute the negativity Black Americans have faced for centuries. The exhibition features 35,000 pounds of obsidian stone for it's healing properties and runs through Spring 2026. To get tickets go to SFMOMA.org 

Join Julian Joseph Kyle at Artworth, his solo exhibition hosted by acclaimed actress and film producer Lena Waithe. There is no RSVP required and they are encouraging anyone who is passionate about storytelling to show up. The exhibit opens on June 15th from 5-9 pm at the Pfizer Building Penthouse in Brooklyn. In the wake of the defunding of public museums that honor Black American and immigrant culture, The Studio Museum is hosting Museums as Systems 2025: Lessons for Survival. The mission is to "reimagine cultural work in the face of systemic change." The three day seminar takes place on June 10th, 11th and 12th from 6 -7:30pm. Taraji P. Henson will be out on the town June 14th in Houston for a wine tasting featuring her wine Seven Daughters. The event is hosted by Theresa Caldwell and Shaunie Henderson as a part of their Taste series and includes a shopping experience and live demo on how to style a red.
